Students are given a scenario of a researcher that is working to determine which type of shellfish can best filter water as a remedy to algae blooms that are occurring in canals in Florida.
Bony Fish Drawings | Feeding and Speed
This provides a review on some of the anatomy of bony fish.
Students will need photos of fish to choose from. The magazine by Florida Fish and Wildlife has many fish to choose from, beginning on page 56.
Paragraph Writing Practice | Sea Turtles
This fully editable writing assignment / research project includes writing prompts on four paragraphs about a sea turtle species of the students choosing. No prior knowledge or instructions of sea turtles is necessary to complete this writing assignment. Students choose a species and do research.
Teacher Demo - Molecular Speed
Options: a) do the demo yourself, b) show the video, or c) have them do the demo in small groups. Give students time to observe and consider what is happening instead of telling them at the start.
Teacher Demo - Evaporation
Effect of evaporation on salinity - at the start of class, mix salt and water in a beaker. Place the beaker on a hot plate and allow it to boil throughout the class period. By the end of the class period, they will observe that only the water molecules evaporate and everything else is left behind → this is why tropical oceans are saltier than polar oceans, there is so much evaporation, and the salt doesn't evaporate.
Group Activity | Modeling Seafloor Spreading
This is a bit complicated to explain to students, but it’s a really great modeling activity for understanding how seafloor is created.
Drawing Prompt | Biomagnification
This is a quick assignment to use if you need to fill time. Students choose between mercury, ciguatera, PCBs, and plastics in the food web to illustrate their introduction to and movement through the food web.
Photosynthesis Lab
The lab portion of this activity requires access to O2 and CO2 probes and readers. It takes 20 or 40 minutes of collecting data, depending on how many materials/groups you have. This video shows details on how to set up a lab using the Vernier probes and chambers. If you don’t have probes, students can still do the activity by using the version that already has the data filled out.
With probes - print the lab instructions (page 1) and the student handout (page 2-3).
Without probes - students can read the lab objective, answer the questions, graph the data, and answer the questions.
Quick Group Activity | Ecological Relationships
In small groups, students read each scenario and write down their answers. Quickly review the scenarios and and the correct answers at the end of class or the start of next class.

Dichotomous Key | Whales

Google Maps Activity | Exploring Iceland
Two slides provide links to location in Iceland on Google Earth that can be explored. Share slides with students to explore on their own, or use it as a whole-class discussion and view together.
Group Activity | Graphing Ocean Temperatures
This activity reviews the polar, temperature, and tropical zones. You will need to provide students with paper to graph on. A large blank poster paper works if you want to do the activity in groups (which is a great way to review graphing) or plain graph paper if they are working individually. Graphing poster paper is even better!

Poster | Phases of the Moon
This is fully editable. There is a colorful option for a digital syllabus (if you wanted to upload it to Google Classroom or another platform) and a black and white version if you wish to print. To use the colored option and make digital, you’ll want to Print, but use the “print to PDF” option and only choose to print page 1.
Google Maps Activity | Exploring Barrier Islands
Students use Google Maps to follow the barrier islands along the coast of Florida.
Drawing Prompt | Anglerfish
Use the video link to draw anglerfish. They look great on the wall with a variety of personality added to each. See example photo.
Simple Demo or Data Collection Activity | Blubber
Use shortening and large gloves to create a layer of “blubber” for students to wear while putting their hands into ice water until they feel too cold. Turn it in to a data collection activity by having the class record times for gloved and non-gloved times in the water.

This can be assigned digitally for students, or you can use the Slide Prompt and display on smartboard for students to do in notebooks.
